Ford SYNC

SYNC is a technology developed by Microsoft, first announced a few years ago at CES, and now comes with most of Ford’s 2010 models.  It’s a voice activated system that operates many of the accessories or tasks that one commonly finds necessary in a motor car.  It gives you audio turn-by-turn navigation, 911 Assist (calling 911 when the air-bags get released, with an opportunity to override it), real-time traffic conditions, and vehicle health report.  It can pair with blueotooth devices, such as your iPhone or other mobile phones, and give you hands-free calling and read out your incoming text messages.  Its USB connection enables music playing from many media players including the iPhone, most of the iPods, Zen players, and PSP.  All on voice commands.  For a list of compatible phones and players, check out Ford’s List.

The software is also upgradable via a USB thumb drive.  Visit SyncMyRidePodcast.com for a chance to win a free iPod Nano or Zune.

Lifting the Embargo

Leo has been itching to talk about his new TWiTmobile for a few weeks, but wanted to wait till the new sponsor, Ford SYNC, is ready.  While recording this episode last Wednesday, Leo had to block out the video and audio on TWiTLive.  The embargo was finally lifted last Sunday, on This Week In Tech.

The New TWiTmobile

Leo’s new car, as hinted by his photo of the audio system in the car (see Episode 951), is a red Ford Mustang 2010.

QWERTY Design

David Whipple, among many many listeners, writes in to make a small correction about the reason for the design of the Qwerty keyboard that Leo talked about in Episode 951.  It’s not so much about slowing the typist down, but rather to avoid the jamming of keys for letters that often go together.
