Logitech Anywhere MX Mouse

“Have we done the Logitech VX Nano Mouse before?” asks Dick jocularly (see Episode 847).  The design of the Anywhere MX Mouse is similar to the VX Nano, sharing most of the Nano’s features, and the following:

  • The tiny USB Receiver is now called the Unifying Receiver as you can add a compatible wireless keyboard or even another mouse to work with it (e.g. switching from a mobile environment to your home or office).
  • Darkfield Laser Technology enables the mouse to work on glass (4mm minimum thickness) and glossy surfaces.
  • On/Off switch on the underside which also acts as a cover for the laser opening.
  • Uses 2 AA batteries (instead of AAA batteries for the VX Nano), but the size remains almost the same as the VX Nano.
  • Ambidextrous design

For a non-travelling version, you can get the bigger brother Performance Mouse MX.

Darkfield Laser Tracking

Logitech’s Darkfield Laser Tracking takes its idea from the technology used in microscopic viewing of tiny objects which are insufficiently contrasted against their environment.  It blocks out the central area of light immediately underneath the lens and only allows rays of light to enter the lens at an angle.  On a perfect surface, the entire field will appear dark, but when light hits a particle (or other imperfections), the light is scattered and reflected into the lens at an angle.  The resulting image is one of bright objects on a dark background, like a starry sky.  As the mouse is moved, it tracks the movements of these bright objects.  The mouse normally uses one laser beam to detect imperfections on the surface, but on glass or glossy surfaces, it will employ the 2nd laser beam as well for a better detection of imperfections. For more details, check out Logitech’s innovation brief.

The mouse still will not work on a “perfect” surface.  That is rare in the real world, but if that does happen, Logitech suggests that you grease the surface with your palm to create the necessary imperfections!

The Big Five?

Leo has not been invited to the Apple Event that is to take place today.  He’s not bitter.  He acknowledges that he’s not one of the Big Four Apple favourites, or the Big Five if you add Dane Golden, formerly of the Argus-Courier, to the mix.

Court Transcripts

Tim Rasmussen grew up watching the Match Game and reading MAD.  As a part-time proofreader of transcripts for court reporters, he’d like to return the favour to Dick by giving him real exchanges in court, for a bit of fun.
